Our Story

Traditional French polishing, done by hand

One person, one method, applied directly to every piece we take on.

Essex French Polishing is run by Mark Walpole, trading as Presto Repairs. Mark carries out every assessment, quote and polishing job himself, there are no subcontractors involved. The work covers wooden furniture and architectural woodwork across Essex, from water rings and scratches to faded grain and old, cloudy finishes that have lost their depth.

The method is traditional pad application. Shellac is built up in thin, stable layers, with pumice pore-filling and colour matching used as standard preparation steps at each stage. This approach takes longer than spray finishing, but it gives far greater control over colour, depth and surface texture, which matters when the piece has existing finish that needs to be matched or blended.

Every job starts with a free written quote after an inspection or a review of photos. The quote sets out the scope, the method and the timings before any work begins. You can choose between on-site polishing, where Mark works at your home or premises, or workshop collection if the piece needs to come in. Once the finish is complete, clear aftercare guidance is provided so the surface stays in good condition.

The business trades as Presto Repairs. The name Essex French Polishing reflects the focus of the work: traditional shellac finishing carried out directly, by hand, for homeowners and commercial clients throughout Essex.

    Pumice pore-filling is a preparation step that closes the open grain of the wood before shellac is applied. Without it, the finish sits unevenly and the final surface lacks the smooth, flat appearance that French polishing is known for.
